Maya Josiam
Maya Josiam is a first year Ph.D. student specializing in Mathematics Education in the School of
Education at the University of Delaware. Her research interests focus on understanding how
preservice and in-service K-8 teachers learn and use vocational mathematics. Additionally, she is
interested in how to further develop vocational mathematical understanding in teachers
through professional learning and teacher preparation programs.
She is currently working with Dr. Amanda Jansen, Dr. Christina Barbieri, and Dr. Leigh McLean on
Rough Draft Math. The project focuses on understanding, examining, and implementing Rough
Draft Thinking: the process of revisiting, refining, and revising thinking through collaboration,
feedback, and discussion.
Previously, Maya was a management consultant at Oliver Wyman in Dallas, Texas serving
education technology and private equity clients. Before starting her Ph.D. at the University of
Delaware, she was a middle school math teacher in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Maya earned
her BBA in Finance and Business Honors from the University of Texas at Austin and her M.S. in
Education from the University of Pennsylvania.
