Elementary Teacher Education students must satisfy the following Upper Division Clearance (UDC) requirements before they can take the upper level education courses. Students will receive an email in the spring of their sophomore year notifying them of a sophomore class meeting where they will learn how to apply for UDC. There are three categories of requirements for clearance: Praxis Core tests, coursework, and GPA. All requirements must be met at least one week prior to the start of the semester for students to be cleared for upper level courses.

Praxis Core Tests

Students must pass the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators test according to the Delaware state guidelines. Please see the Praxis web page for information about how to register and prepare for these tests in reading, writing, and mathematics.

Coursework

The following General Studies courses must be successfully completed with a grade of C- or better. The list of General Studies courses is available on the Required Courses web page.

  • ENGL 110
  • Two of the three science courses
  • Two of the four social sciences courses
  • MATH 251, 252, and 253

The following education courses must also be successfully completed with a grade of C- or better: EDUC 205, 210, 230, 240/247, 258/259, and 286.

GPA

The minimum GPA requirement for UDC is 2.6.

Stewards of Children Online Training

Students must successfully complete the Stewards of Children program and submit the certificate of completion if they did not complete it in EDUC 100 or when they switched to the ETE major from another UD major. This program can be completed online at the Stewards of Children Online Training Program web page. The online training costs $10 and takes approximately 2 hours to complete.
