Community remembers senior secretary in School of Education

Beverly Baker McLain, retired senior secretary in the School of Education of the University of Delaware College of Education and Human Development, died on May 16, 2022. She was 79.

Ms. McLain joined the School of Education in 1986 and retired in 2005.

Robert Hampel, professor in the School of Education, said, “Beverly was in the generation that shifted from the old notions of secretarial work (filing, typing syllabi, phone messages!) to the tougher 21st century expectations of salaried staff. Her good humor and kind heart enhanced the school for many years.”

Ms. McLain was employed at DuPont and the New Castle County Chamber of Commerce before she joined UD.

Her obituary notes that she had a green thumb and was “infamous for her beautiful African violets that she cared for at her home.” She also enjoyed baking and provided baked goods to family and friends.
