CEHD Professor Discusses Phonics and the Science of Reading

In a recent Brookings Institution article, Roberta Golinkoff, Unidel H. Rodney Sharp Chair and professor in the School of Education and the Departments of Psychological and Brain Sciences and Linguistics and Cognitive Science, and her co-author Kathy Hirsh-Pasek of Temple University discuss the science behind learning to read and the  importance of phonics.

Golinkoff and Pasek emphasize that children need to learn phonics and letters to sound out the written word, but learning phonics alone will not generate strong readers. Children also need to make connections between a rich knowledge base and a growing language system in order to understand the meaning of the words they sound out.
