M.Ed. in Literacy (online), Fall 2019
With an undergraduate degree in Elementary Education and two years under my belt as an elementary English Learner (EL) teacher, I decided to enroll in UD’s online M.Ed. in Literacy program because I wanted to learn how to better teach reading and writing to my unique learners.
The main advantage of the online program is that I can complete it on my own time and schedule. And even though we don’t meet face-to-face, I still have forged strong relationships with my professors and fellow students through video discussions, email, discussion boards and more. The professors are readily available when you need them.
So far this program has improved my practice significantly. This year I started working with kindergarten students, using numerous strategies from my courses to help these young students develop early literacy skills. I also have been able to apply new strategies to the older grades I work with while modifying them to benefit my EL students.
This spring I am taking a Supervised Reading Clinic course where I will be strategically tutoring one of my EL students in fluency, decoding, vocabulary skills, spelling and reading motivation. I can’t wait to apply all I have learned to these tutoring sessions in order to improve this student’s reading skills, while gaining necessary instructional skills at the same time.
